Center for Urban Waters Design Development
The Center for Urban Waters is a 51,000-square-foot three-story office and laboratory building. The building is positioned on the site at 326 East D Street to maximize views of downtown Tacoma across the Thea Foss Waterway. A public esplanade and a floating dock are included in the facility.

Green Building Elements
The City is pursuing LEED Platinum certification, the highest possible rating awarded under the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system. Green building elements include:
- Green roof
- Natural ventilation and operable windows
- Daylighting
- Rain garden and other low impact site development
- Ground source heat pump
- Bike storage lockers and shower facilities to encourage alternative commuting

Future Development Opportunities
The selected design preserves the adjacent property for future facility development. By locating the building on the northern end of the site, future construction will have a view of downtown and the waterfront.
